INDIE MEMPHIS MICRO CINEMA CLUB SHOWCASES INTERNATIONAL ANIMATED FILMS FROM NEXTFRAME FILM FESTIVAL AT THE POWER HOUSE
December Screening
MEMPHIS, Tenn.— Indie Memphis, organizer of the annual Soul of Southern Film Festival, is featuring works from NextFrame, the University Film and Video Association’s (UFVA) touring festival of international student film and video at the next Micro Cinema Club screening, Wednesday, December 13, 7:30 p.m., Power House gallery, 45 G.E. Patterson. Admission is free and open to everyone.
The December 13 lineup will feature 10 short animated films:
FUGA (Fugue), a man’s encounter with childhood and fleeting memories, directed by Or Moran of the Bezalel Academy of Art & Design, Israel.
Unwilled Inheritance: A Portrait of Three Generations, provides an emotional look at the filmmakers’ distant relationship with his father that is meticulously hand-crafted. Directed by Nathan Broaddus of Hampshire College, MA, this short took second place in the 2006 festival.
Ring of Fire, directed by Rini Yun Keagy of Temple University, PA, explores the shape of things as a volcano loses its head in Indonesia.
Flight, directed by Andrew Allen of University of Washington, WA, provides a condensed history of aviation and man’s fascination in reaching the skies. (Photo attached.)
In a Distance, But Within View, directed by You-Jin Lee from Rhode Island School of Design, RI, is a visual poem in short stop animation.
Garbus (Hunchback), directed by Joanna Polak, Akademia Sztuk Pieknych, Poland, is a poignant tale about society’s outcast noted for its moving black and white hand-drawn animation. (Photo attached.)
Latent Sorrow, directed by Shon Kim, of Cal Arts, CA, fuses the abstract with the literal.
Monster, directed by Michaela Ostadalova, Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, Slovakia, and 2006 first place winner, highlights the moment when you discover a monster in your house.
Say Yesss, directed by Christopher Thomas, Temple University, PA, takes a close look at insect love. (Photo attached.)
Telekontar, directed by Galit Weisberg, Tel-Hai Rodman College, Israel, follows an alien in his journey through malicious yet enchanting landscapes.
NextFrame, now in its fifteenth year, is recognized as the world’s premiere touring festival for showcasing student work and promising visionaries of the next generation of filmmaking. For more information about NextFrame, visit www.temple.edu/nextframe.
The Indie Memphis Micro Cinema Club is focused on showing short films—those that are shorter in length than a feature film—of independent filmmakers from across the globe to promote indie artists and expose audiences to the diverse array of interesting films that before now have never made it to the Memphis market. The Micro Cinema Club is held the second Wednesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. in the Power House. December’s screening is approximately 60 minutes with popcorn and beverages provided.

Skowhegan Information (I'll see you there)

Skowhegan is an intensive nine-week summer residency program for emerging visual artists, providing an exceptionally stimulating and rigorous environment to support artistic creation and interaction.
Artists are provided with a concentrated period to work, created with the support and critical assistance of a distinguished faculty of Resident and Visiting Artists. Founded in 1946 by artists, and still governed by artists for artists, the program provides an atmosphere in which participants are encouraged to work and explore free of the expectations of the marketplace and academia. As always this year's Faculty of distinguished artists reflects a broad formal and conceptual spectrum of approaches to art-making.
Through its admissions process Skowhegan seeks to bring together a gifted and diverse group of individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to art-making and inquiry. Sixty-five participants are accepted annually. Applicants must be at least 21 years old before the session begins. An academic background in art is not required. The admissions panels consider both those who are enrolled in academic programs and artists who have been working independently. Skowhegan's financial assistance program helps ensure that artists accepted to the School may participate regardless of their financial status. A variety of full and partial scholarships are available to those who provide evidence of financial need. Skowhegan also works in partnership with several schools and art departments to provide Matching Fellowships.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2007
A detailed description of the program, financial assistance opportunities and the 2007 application are now available online at:

I Heart Politics
A former NFL quarterback, a seven-fingered farmer and a '70's rocker who posed half-naked on an old album cover began learning Monday how to be members of Congress.
mmmmm
seven fingers
i wonder if this is total finger count
or just on his left hand
or perhaps
his right hand
i also wonder if they teach them
how to fuck us
lower middle class type folks

Class of '06

here are some of the images
from last nights class of '06 show
downtown
it was a fund-raiser/art show
the show was good
it was a nice mix
of this and that
and most of memphis' art stars were there
hanging in the show
and there to check out the show as well
the first image is niles wallace's piece
it is a great piece the artist said that he will forever add to
i guess we will never run out of carpet
janice said it reminds her a large-sized childrens hat
i think it looks like one of madonnas cone-shaped boobs
speaking of madonna
did you know that she
was up for the part of
don corleones daughter
that eventually went to sophia coppola
hmmm
the next is erinn cox's installation
i spelled her name right by the way
unless lantana spelled it wrong
subject verb agreement anyone
anyways
these pink and hairy pieces
have to be a nightmare to hang
i guess i can ask her
when i get into mca
and watch her hang similar work in seminar classes
if there is such a thing
the next piece is some of
amber mcgregor's installation
then
rebekah laurenzi's installation
then
we all know and love bobby spillmans work
i wonder if he got off early
i wonder how alans birthday party went

MFA Students at University of Memphis Host Open Studio
The University of Memphis Fine Arts MFA students will be hosting an Open Studio Night on Thursday, November 9, from 6-9 pm. After viewing Adrienne Outlaw’s Seek Shelter exhibition at the Art Museum, open 6-8pm, guests will be provided with information about the MFA program as well as a map to the painting, sculpture, and photography studios.
Pixy Liao, a second-year photography student from Shanghai is excited about sharing her finished work as well as works in progress. Pixy owns an impressive collection of unusual cameras, including types of toy cameras many people have never seen. She may even be wielding one of these during Open Studio Night, an event which she claims both educates the community and raises awareness of the diverse artistic experience available in Memphis.
Elisha Gold, a first-year sculpture student who focuses on creating artwork with metal is also excited about the debut of his sculpture in the Memphis community. Along with his metalwork, Ely has become a regular participant in performance art on the UM campus. In his studio youÏ€ll find the bongo drums he uses to accompany these performances along with more traditional sculptors’ tools.
Jada Thompson, a painter graduating this Spring who is eager to prop open her door and welcome the public into her space, plans to take advantage of the opportunity to socialize with other artists in their studios as well. Jada says, As artists and art students, we seem to always be very engrossed in making better art, making more art, making new art. This is an opportunity to stop, breathe and put ourselves in context. Besides, I want to see what our studios look like when they're all cleaned up.
Ms. Thompson also promises to have cookies in her studio, but don't linger for too long; she's not the only artist who will be providing refreshments. Participating artists also include Nancy Cheairs, Gena Serey, Chandler Pritchett, Tim Kinard, Pixy Liao, Sunny Montgomery, Kate Strzok, Melissa Rackham, Gerecho Delaney, Chase Malone, Kathleen Murray, Lea Alexander, Brooke Foy, Elisha Gold, and Sarah Boyce. Along with snacks, guests at Open Studio night will experience hospitality, information, entertainment, and the work of some very promising young artists.

Chris Uphues Lecture at U of M
Chris Uphues to Give Public Lecture at the University of Memphis
Chris Uphues, a painter from Brooklyn, will give a public lecture about his work at the University of Memphis on November 2 at 7:00. The lecture will be held in Rom 226 of the FedEx Institute of Technology which is located at 365 Innovation Drive.
Chris Uphues’ paintings are done in a style most closely related to cartoon animation. The characters are seemingly light and upbeat, but due to the density of information in a single painting and the way that these cartoon characters slowly emerge from tightly packed shapes, the overall effect is surprisingly foreboding.
Uphues has exhibited his work in Chicago at the Carl Hammer and Bucketrider galleries and recently in New York at the Monster Island gallery. In 2006, he had work at the Linda Gallery in Hamburg Germany and the Unit B Gallery in San Antonio, Texas. He is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. In 2005, he was the recipient of a State of Illinois Individual Artist Grant.
This lecture is free and open to the public. This lecture is made possible by the Department of Art and the Committee for Co-sponsorship.
